The sports network said the papers’ authenticity has been verified by two people who took part in the raid, which was part of an unrelated mail fraud probe. Most of the bets were for about $2,000.

“This does it. Postal Inspection Service in October 1989. This closes the door,” said John Dowd, the former federal prosecutor who led MLB’s 1989 investigation.

“Since we submitted the application earlier this year, we committed to MLB that we would not comment on specific matters relating to reinstatement,” the statement read. Rose, who would certainly be in the Hall of Fame if not for his ban, has long lobbied to be allowed back into the sport. “I need to maintain that. The actual notebook has remained under court-ordered seal for 26 years and is currently stored in the National Archives’ New York office.

Rose issued a statement to ESPN through his lawyer, Raymond Genco.

Dowd said his team had sought the records in order to prove Rose bet on the sport while a player.

This closes the door,” said John Dowd, the former federal prosecutor

“We knew that [Bertolini] recorded the bets, and that he bet himself, but we never had his records,” Dowd told ESPN. But the newly surfaced documents could spell an end to the 74-year-old legend’s Cooperstown aspirations.

In the five months covered by the notebook, Rose allegedly placed at least one bet on baseball 30 times, as well as placing wagers on other sports, ESPN reported. To be sure, I’m eager to sit down with [MLB commissioner Rob] Manfred to address my entire history — the good and the bad — and my long personal journey since baseball. Therefore at this point, it’s not appropriate to comment on any specifics.”

. He refused to give them to us.”

Rose, the sport’s all-time leader with 4,256 hits, has been banned from the sport since 1989. That meeting likely will come sometime after the All-Star break. “We tried to get them. For the next 15 years, he insisted he never gambled, then in 2004 admitted he had but only as a manager.

Pete Rose’s long insistence that he never gambled on baseball while playing the game may be unraveling, after ESPN unearthed documents it says shows he bet on the Cincinnati Reds while a player-manager in the last year of his illustrious career.

Major League Baseball has historically reserved its harshest punishment for players who gamble on the sport, claiming such wagers affect baseball’s integrity – even if a player such as Rose bet on his own team to win.

The documents obtained by ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” are copies of pages from a notebook seized from the home of former Rose associate Michael Bertolini during a raid by the U.S READ MORE

It is played by placing a bet of one or more credits and by inserting money into the machine. People cherish these games across the globe. The amount of leaderboards bloggers compete in is only limited by the amount of sports and topics they blog about.

SportsBlog moderators categorize each post a blogger makes down to the team level (e.g.: NFL / AFC EAST / JETS)

SportsBlog keeps track of how many unique visitors those categorized posts receive throughout the month

SportsBlog adds up all of the unique visitors a blogger receives to posts in each category each month (resetting on the 1st of each month)

The aggregate amount of unique visitors received that month determines a blogger’s rank in the relevant category

SportsBlog leaderboards are based on the amount of traffic posts in certain categories receive (it is not based on how much traffic a blog in general receives). For example, bloggers who post about the Jets are automatically entered into the “NFL,” “AFC EAST,” “JETS,” and “ALL SPORTS” leaderboards..

Bloggers are emailed at the end of each month with their final rankings, and the blog owner also receives a digital trophy on their profile if they place within the Top 3 of a category.

Bloggers are automatically entered into leaderboards that belong to the parent of the topics they write about.

The process works as follows:

Bloggers can be in the running for multiple leaderboards each month READ MORE

For proof that we’re in financial hell, look around. But Gere gives us a window into the soul of a man who finally realizes that even money will no longer help him lie to himself. Wearing the trappings of wealth like a second skin, Gere invites us to see what Robert sees. Despite his box-office success in crowd-pleasers such as “An Officer and a Gentleman,” “Pretty Woman” and “Chicago,” Gere has long been underrated. Gere digs so deep into this flawed tycoon that we come to understand Robert’s actions without for a minute forgiving them. And Gere nails every nuance in a role that holds up a dark mirror to the way we live now. No Academy love, not even for his sinister brilliance in “Internal Affairs,” “American Gigolo” and “The Hoax,” or for the battered heart he brought to the cheated-on husband in “Unfaithful.”

Story highlightsRichard Gere stars as a fraudulent financier in the filmCritic says Gere’s performance is “a thing of toxic beauty”The movie also stars Susan Sarandon and Laetitia Casta

It’s instructive to note what a killer actor Richard Gere can be when a movie rises to his level.

“Arbitrage” is such a movie, a sinfully entertaining look at the sins committed in the name of money. His rapt, watchful performance is a thing of toxic beauty. And it resonates in his exceptional screenplay, which potently captures the gleaming seduction of Robert’s world and the fear that festers underneath.

Like the best movies, “Arbitrage” persuades us to ask tough questions about ourselves. And Gere knows the man, inside and out. And the glamour in his field of vision — cheers to cinematographer Yorick Le Saux (I Am Love) for the sheen and composer Cliff Martinez (Drive) for the seductive mood — is tempting enough to make us all complicit.

Gere’s Robert Miller is the picture of unflappable elegance. But Robert keeps his cool until the sudden death of one of these women has him dodging a possible murder rap with the grudging help of Jimmy Grant (a terrific Nate Parker), the son of the family chauffeur and the only black man in Robert’s circle of white privilege. Fraud puts pressure on Robert’s skill at deceiving wife Ellen (Susan Sarandon), French mistress Julie (Laetitia Casta) and chief accountant Brooke (Brit Marling), who also happens to be his daughter. Docs run in the Jarecki family, with half brothers Andrew (“Capturing the Friedmans”) and Eugene (“Why We Fight”) making notable contributions to the genre. Watch him in the scene when Sarandon — in full, feisty flower — hits Robert with a lifetime of resentments. Gere’s performance in “Arbitrage” is too good to ignore. That’s when NYPD detective Michael Bryer (Tim Roth) smells a rat and Robert’s world begins to unravel.. Good job on that, since he’s just lost $400 million in a bad copper-mine investment, and if he can’t cover it up and unload his company on a major bank, his career will go kaput along with his fortune. It’s an implosive tour de force.

There’s enough plot here to stuff a miniseries or three, yet “Arbitrage” never descends to bland and predictable. True, this territory has been covered from Wall Street to last year’s “Margin Call.” But Gere and first-time director Nicholas Jarecki put a tantalizing spin on what goes on in the head of a fraudulent hedge-fund manager when he decides to stick it to the rest of us, including his own family.

Jarecki knows the territory. Credit Jarecki, whose combustible directing debut gives “Arbitrage” the charge of a thriller and the provocation of a moral fable. As the son of two commodities traders, Jarecki has Wall Street in his DNA. She can’t rock his composure. At 62, he is at the peak of his powers. Jarecki has an eye for the telling detail, not surprising given his start with the 2005 documentary “The Outsider” (about rogue director James Toback) READ MORE

You can change games whenever you want to. If you are waiting for the bingo call to start you can be playing a slot machine to win a couple of dollars. When we are adults we also get to enjoy the benefits of playing games for money. Enjoyment is always a key to playing online casinos.

The four reasons we have listed above all center on two things. You do not just have to play one game.. It is also about meeting people. It is about the free money. The online casino games vary from slot machines and arcade games to variations of table games. As children, parents offer us different types of games to help us learn things like social skills and to keep us occupied. Craps, baccarat, Texas Hold’em and other games are always available online. By playing five cents one could win a hundred dollars. It is also about playing the best poker players in the world at the online tournaments.

Some of the gamblers will play online casino slots thinking that luck is on their side; that this once they will hit the button and win the million dollar jackpot. They are also thinking what they need to do to win. We are able to buy a lottery ticket, take a chance on the spinning of a wheel, or use strategy to earn free cash.

It would be impossible to list every reason for why people like casinos, but we do have some of the top reasons that individuals find casinos and most importantly online casinos enjoyable. Many of us grow up still enjoying a game now and then. This lucky feeling draws gamblers in every day.

The online casino gambling also gives players a break from reality. The fact is there are many reasons why people like casinos. One, you can play online casino games and win money. If you have always wanted to try craps but could never afford the Vegas tables you can enter into a game online. We have just listed a few.

There seems to be an inherent sense that games are enjoyable. They can learn about other cultures, other’s lives, and just have a great time. Roulette is another option of online casino games. Whether you are sitting in a land casino or at home visiting the virtual world of casinos online, there is always that excitement. If someone is playing the online casino poker they are thinking about what they need to bet. The music that plays or the flashing lights of the online casino slots draw players in.. Our first reason is the atmosphere of fun. In the online casino world meeting people from all over the world is a possibility. Players can feel like they do not have to think about their problems, their stresses, when they are playing a game. Gamblers can play someone in China while sitting in the UK. Instead they focus on the wins, the strategy it takes to win, and the good times they are having READ MORE

While the polls show this week’s vote is too close to call, bookies like Betfair are giving the “remain” side a 76 percent probability of winning.

LONDON — As if the stakes were not high enough in Britain’s nail-biting vote this week, people are betting record amounts of money on its outcome.

Betfair, bookmakers Ladbrokes and Paddy Power and the Betting Research Unit at Nottingham Business School all estimate that the total value of bets on the vote placed in Britain will reach, and likely exceed, 100 million pounds.

“This is comfortably the biggest political betting event in history and dwarves both the general election and the Scottish referendum,” says Lewis Davey, spokesman for Paddy Power, referring to the Scottish vote on independence last year.

Betting exchange Betfair says it had taken 45.8 million pounds in wagers on the E.U. That’s reflected in financial markets, where stocks and the British pound are relatively buoyant one day before the big event.

The betting has also gained the attention of global investors as a gauge of the likelihood of an event’s outcome. But the importance, drama and uncertainty that have surrounded this vote have made it a spectator sport in its own right. vote as of Wednesday and expects a final amount of 50 million pounds. All Rights Reserved. presidential race, which was its previous record for a political event. It has become increasingly popular, particularly to bet on financial markets.

Betting is his way to get in on the drama because as a foreign citizen from China he will not have a right to vote.

. referendum betting already hit a record for a political event days ago for Betfair, bookmaker BetFred and IG, the largest provider of spread betting services.

For Stephen Jones, 55, betting is a form of insurance against disappointment. Ladbrokes has seen a tenfold increase in recent years.

E.U. That’s particularly true since pollsters have missed badly in measuring sentiment before some of Britain’s most recent votes, the last general election and the Scottish referendum.

Thursday’s vote on whether to leave the European Union, which will have lasting consequences for the country and Europe, is due to break the record as the most bet-upon political event in Britain’s history. Spread betting, on the other hand, does not provide a simple win or lose outcome, but can provide payoffs based on the accuracy of the bet. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed. The referendum also outmatches the 35 million pounds placed on the 2014 World Cup Final.

“If we are going to remain in the E.U., at least I will take compensation,” said Jones, who expects to get 3,000 pounds back in profit in such an event. “But my big win is to leave the E.U.”

Betfair allows people to place wagers against each other rather than setting odds like the traditional bookmakers. That surpasses the 40 million pounds placed on the 2012 U.S. Polls suggest it is too close to call, while bookies give the “remain” side a higher chance of winning.

© 2016 The Associated Press. He intends to vote to leave the E.U., but has placed bets on “remain” to at least get something in case of his side’s defeat.

Such betting fever is normally associated with major sports events, with people here habitually placing wagers online or in betting shops on everything from horse races to football matches. He was back in the betting shop this week to place additional wagers on behalf of three American friends.

The bookies’ odds have largely been in synch with global financial markets. The industry is expecting 100 million pounds, or nearly $150 million, to be wagered by the time the result is known in the early hours of Friday.

“This is a historical event, and I want to take part in it,” said Can Zhao, an investment researcher who last week placed a 135-pound ($198) bet on “remain” at a Ladbrokes betting parlor near London’s Kings Cross train station.

Betting on political events used to be a niche area in the gambling industry but has become more widespread, particularly in Britain READ MORE

Plenty of seaweed is edible, and you can always plan raids on areas that appear to be zombie free.  You’ll have plenty of time to hang out offshore and watch for activity.

Parts

Shelter

No self respecting zombie would ever choose to live in a boat, so every marina you come across will be filled with abandoned boats just waiting for you to strip them of all the necessary gear.  A few things, like radios, won’t be of much use, unless you believe there are pockets of survivors calling out their locations.  I can’t imagine any of them would be giving you weather reports so unless you’re looking for survivors (and I would highly recommend against that as there always seems to be one or two infected people amongst them) don’t worry about a radio. Being able to distance yourself from the horde of undead is only one reason to plan on using your sailboat to survive the apocalypse.

Entertainment

Fuel

Food.

Once you find that “clean” island to live on, you’re golden.  All you have to do is wait for all the zombies on the continents to die out and you can head back home.  You might want to give some consideration to the animalistic mentality that will be prevalent among survivors and try to calculate how long it will take for civilization to re-establish itself. The downside is that people that live on sailboats tend to be cheap, which means that most of your viewing selections (from your vessel, and salvage from abandoned vessels) will be the bad, bad slasher-type DVDs commonly found in the $1 bin at discount stores.  The ghost-of-the-psychopathic-ice-climber-taking-out-the-teenagers-one-by-one type of movies.  Of course, many zombie DVDs also fall into this category, so perhaps you’ll have access to a lot of training videos.  Bonus!

Ah yes, zombies.  They love the night, hide in unexpected places, and desperately seek to consume your flesh – but they don’t swim.  The most dedicated might, perhaps, walk along the riverbed to get across, but they’re slow; also, I’ve never seen them crossing large bodies of water, like oceans.  As long as you’re in the ocean you could easily pull up anchor to escape once you saw the throng heading into the waves towards your anchored vessel. Just get the good stuff and the beans.

Well, you have a problem here; as a rule, cruisers don’t carry firearms – something about ending up in 3rd world prisons seems to dissuade most people.  While you can attempt raids on land-based strongholds, this is not generally a good idea as these tend to be guarded by survivalist who shoot first, ask questions later.  Your better bet is to get creative with what you will likely find: flare guns, the occasion spear fishing setup, and lots and lots of little tiny pocketknives.  Consider creating oars that double as weapons by attaching knife blades to them.  Don’t dismiss the value of a good whack with a frying pan, either.

It’s hard to rank these with regard to importance as some are interdependent while others are advantageous, but not critical.  It is also difficult to be sure that all the most common concepts are covered, such as, what if your sailboat is on a lake?  Should you be more worried about survivors swamping your boat trying to escape land or zombies walking along the lake bottom?  Most of the most critical ideas can be modified for lake survival and perhaps adapted to escaping down a river.  If you will be considering a river escape, you’ll want a powerboat, since zombies won’t be inclined to open draw bridges for you.  Get yourself a sailboat once you’ve reached the shore, and apply the following concepts:

The wind[1] powers your home, and you don’t need to go ashore to get it.  Your sailboat should be equipped with a spare set of sails and a good sewing machine to keep the boat’s power source in optimum condition.  If you do need to refill the engine now and again, most marinas have a fuel dock with no house nearby for zombies to hide in.  A quick trip in to fuel up, maybe grab some water, and you are off, away from the dangerous shoreline.  Another advantage is that docks are usually clear so you’ll see the zombies coming as soon as their feet hit the wood.

Destination

Weapons

Look for small islands that never had people to start with.  Of course this means they’re either uninhabitable, or wildlife refuges.  Go for the refuge, but watch out for the ranger if you do.  It would totally suck to let down your guard only to find that some randomly infected/affected park ranger is roaming the island hoping for careless sailors.  This is a good place to test the ‘zombie bait’ plan.

The one thing cruisers have in abundance is movies.  Sailing gives you a lot of free time and you can only watch the waves for so long.  Search any abandoned boats you come across for the rusting cans of beans they all carry.  Give it at least one good growing season so you can trade your fish for some tasty zucchini.

If you’ve been able to save some friends along with yourself, you had better really like these people.  Even when you’ve managed to trade your way up to something giant that sails, your living space will still be pretty danged small when compared to the houses you all used to live in.  With enough people, though, you could always do sort of a “Survivor” plan and have secret alliances that choose who will be used as bait, should you miscalculate and run into some serious zombie action.  Maybe seeking out nests of survivors would be a good idea after all.

Small or large, your sailboat will have a place to sleep.  Granted, it may be a little small, or require a gymnastics background to get in to, but it’s there.  Keep your sailing range to the equator and you won’t READ MORE
